Twitter’s Location Features Will Be Completely Opt-In

We learned yesterday at 140TC that Twitter’s location aware functionality is going live any day now , and today Platform Product Manager Ryan Sarver revealed some further details about the mechanics of the upcoming Twitter Local features. According to a report from Gina Trapani , the location functionality will be totally opt-in to the user. In other words, location data will only be stored for your tweets if you explicitly enable the flag in your account settings; it will not be turned on by default.

Preview Project Retweet in Various Twitter Apps [PICS]

Twitter’s Location Aware Platform Going Live “Any Day Now”

We’re here at the 140TC Twitter Conference in Los Angeles, and in a developer track session Twitter’s platform lead Alex Payne just indicated that the upcoming Twitter Local functionality will be going live in the API “any day now.” All the hard work is now done, and the platform team is simply waiting for the final go ahead to ship it live. Since developers will need time to actually make use of the new functionality, which allows the passing of latitude and longitude data with a tweet, we might not see services and apps making use of it immediately on day one
